Ilana Seati

Ilana Seati’s work explores the familiar and unfamiliar nature of portraiture and anatomical representation. Her work epitomizes the idea of secrets, as it reveals an imaginative portrayal of a human figure. It thus gives a sense of the presence of the real and the unreal. Dating back-many years ago, artists have been appointed to produce a portrayal of others who wished to have their likenesses preserved, and before 1900's portraits were anticipated to convey accurate resemblances of their sitters. However, as time continues to progress, the tradition of Western portrait painting is changing and this has allowed artists to add their own aesthetic ideas to their subjects, resulting in a far more complex and engaging imagery. Seati’s artistic manipulation of her subjects expands further into the semi-abstract realm. In this series of studies of the male and female figures on paper, Seati searches for a greater understanding of intimacy in portrait-making. All of the artworks on this exhibition launched from life drawings in studio and were then re-worked privately in her own time, where she began adding elements of her imagination and interpretation to the image. Seati examines the concept of truth and fantasy in her works and, in particular, she looks at the way in which we move across the boundaries of reality and fiction in our lives, suggesting that occasionally figments of our imagination are, in fact, reality and vice versa.
