Reducing Reliance on Cobalt for Lithium-ion Batteries
EV batteries can have up to 20 kg of Co in each 100 kilowatt-hour (kWh) pack. Right now, Co can make up to 20% of the weight of the cathode in lithium ion EV batteries. There are economic, security, and societal drivers to reduce Co content. Cobalt is mined as a secondary material from mixed nickel (Ni) and copper ores.
New strategy improves performance of spent high-voltage lithium cobalt oxide batteries …
In a study published in Advanced Materials, a research team led by Prof. Zhang Yunxia from the Hefei Institutes of Physical Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has developed an integrated bulk and surface commodification strategy to upgrade spent lithium cobalt oxide (S-LCO) batteries to operate at high voltages.
Understanding the Role of Cobalt in Batteries
A new report by the Helmholtz Institute Ulm (HIU) in Germany suggests that worldwide supplies of lithium and cobalt, materials used in electric vehicle batteries, will become critical by 2050.. The situation for cobalt, a metal that is typically produced as a byproduct of copper and nickel mining, appears to be especially dire as "…the cobalt …
Understanding the Role of Cobalt in Batteries
"When the lithium-ion is taken out of the oxide (in the cathode), the lithium-ion has a positive charge, so the cobalt changes its oxidation state so that the oxide stays electrically neutral. A small amount of the cobalt changes its electronic character from oxidation state +3 to +4 to account for the removal of the lithium-ion," said …

Unveiling Oxygen Evolution Reaction on LiCoO
Introduction. In 1980, John Goodenough improved the work of Stanley Whittingham discovering the high energy density of lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO 2), doubling the capacity of then-existing lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). 1 LiCoO 2 (LCO) offers high conductivity and large stability throughout cycling with 0.5 Li + per formula unit (Li …
Lithium cobalt oxide
Fully reduced lithium cobalt oxide can be prepared by heating a stoichiometric mixture of lithium carbonate Li2 CO 3 and cobalt(II,III) oxide Co 3 O 4 or metallic cobalt at 600–800 C, then annealing the product at 900 C for many hours, all under an oxygen atmosphere. ...
Can Cobalt Be Eliminated from Lithium-Ion Batteries?
Following the discovery of LiCoO 2 (LCO) as a cathode in the 1980s, layered oxides have enabled lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) to power portable electronic devices that sparked the digital revolution of the …

A New Look at Lithium Cobalt Oxide in a Broad Voltage Range for Lithium-Ion Batteries …
The electrochemical behaviors and lithium-storage mechanism of LiCoO 2 in a broad voltage window (1.0−4.3 V) are studied by charge−discharge cycling, XRD, XPS, Raman, and HRTEM. It is found that the reduction mechanism of LiCoO 2 with lithium is associated with the irreversible formation of metastable phase Li 1+x Co II III O 2−y and then the final …

Thermal analysis of lithium ion battery cathode materials for the ...
The amount of cobalt used in this cathode material compared to older lithium-cobalt-oxide (LCO, LiCoO 2) is massively reduced. Due to its high safety standard, owing to the high thermal runaway temperatures, and its low price, caused by the full absence of cobalt, lithium–iron-phosphate (LFP, LiFePO 4) is also currently on the rise [4].
